These dwarf German Shepherds were born in two of our litters. It is thought that both parents must carry the gene for this to occur. Although it is rare that this happens, there are universities doing studies to figure out when and why they develop this way. We would like to thank the human parents of these special babies for giving them the love and care they have!!! |

Pituitary dwarfism syndrome in dogs occurs
when young dogs suffer from deficiencies in the amount of growth
hormone, or GH, secreted by the pituitary gland. Dwarfism can be
an inherited condition, but it can also happen when the pituitary gland
fails to develop properly or when it's damaged by disease. Canine
pituitary dwarfism syndrome is often inherited. Breeds prone to
the syndrome include the German Shepherd and the Carnelian bear
dog. The trait exists on a recessive gene, so an affected puppy
must have inherited one deformed gene from each parent. When two
of these defective genes appear in the same puppy, pituitary dwarfism
